Gloomy Sunday(1999) by Rolf Schubel
Gloomy Sunday is a story that three men Laszio, Andras, Hans, falls in love with Ilona. Ilona both loves Laszio and Andras at the same time, they struggle to accept it but finally they share Illona’s love. Andras made a beautiful piano song, Gloomy Sunday, which makes young people to suicide in depression period. Ilona rejects Hans’ proposal, and Hans comes back to Budapest with power. The movies interweaves food, music, love and history together. It is interesting that Hans comes back at SZABO restaurant in Budapest when he has 80th birthday party to have a beef roll, which he ordered all the time to see Ilona. Sometimes food can be a trigger to remember the past. Through having same food at the same place with same music or atmosphere, people want to go back that time or remind that time depending on sensual experience and imagination.
