Film: Big Night

I decided to watch the movie Big Night, which has some parallels to Babette's Feast. The movie tells the story of relationships and cultural differences by way of a dinner.

There are many brilliant and charming moments in the film, one is pictured below. Everything rests in the complicated delicacy from a small Village in Italy, all the worlds best ingredients in one fillo wrapped dense and cooked in the oven. A beautiful moment of anticipation culminates in the the touching, taping, listening to and cutting of the dish.

This is a story of immigrant hardship, integrity, love and truth to an art from. The brothers trying to run a resturant argue and fail and reconcile in silence over an omelette (I had just seen Julia Child instructions on making an omelette and couldn't help but compare). Food can be so much, represent so much. Food is cultural identity, love, lust an endless metaphor.
