I am Love” and “Like Water for Chocolate” two movies reaction

I watched “I am Love” and  “Like Water for Chocolate” on one day with short time gap. After I finished watching these movies I was really overwhelmed through both stories. Both of them indicate lovely drama stories. I really fascinated by all scenes and stories and role of the food between them. I totally penetrate into two stories as if both of them were same and continue of each other. And as I get about that it seems Food in these movies plays as third character, beside people and scenes and environment. My questions are that does food plays as a love? Food is love? Love is food? Food with love? Love with food Or food brings love? How one can detach them. Maybe it is impossible to separate these elements, which make themselves complete.

And also these two movies express love story around food, kitchen, chef, and restaurant in two different place, era and country but with same concept.

In “I Am Love” displays old lady who was wife and mom and she fell in love with his son’s friend. It shows the unusual love, but the love is love. Mom(Emma) felt love in his son’s friend who was very professional chef and he was supposed to do work with his son ( Edo). During the movie, Emma’s daughter fell in love with other girl, although she had boyfriend but she was changed and transferred to be lesbian. It was another unusual love during the movie but mentioned to pure love that it doesn’t matter who fell in love, it is important to have strong affair feeling and passion. One day Emma was in his restaurant and was eating her food was made with chef Antonio. As if she became satisfied with eating that food. The food represents her love and Antonio. She played with food looks like she touches his body. Love, food and body replace with each other or dance along with frolic. This scene grabbed my attention extremely for allegory of love.  The pure amour of person represents itself in the food manufacture of that person. It was really amazing when she touched shrimps. And now when I was writing this description, it reminded me exactly similar this experience in couple years ago that I had with my love, and we played and hit to our forks before starting the food, it looks our love transferred through the forks and forks had very strong touchable feeling. 

 However, the other part of the story turned to other thing. In one banquet, Edo saw his favorite childhood’s soup was cooked y Antonio on the table. The Russian soup that only his mom knew about that. With other evidences, Edo suddenly figured out that there is a relationship between his mom and his best friend Antonio. He left the table and Emma tried to find him and talk. Unfortunately during their argument he accidently felt down and hit to concrete edge, and died in his hospital. After his funeral Emma was very mania and upset she tried to leave the family very oddly and go back to Antonio. In that moment just her girl understood her with very meaningful look to let her mom be free and find her right love direction.   

In second movie “Like Water for Chocolate” is a love-failed story through different Mexican recipes, each of them has specific role and effect on one happen during the movie. Titla, the first character of the movie, rose in a very traditional and conservative family and she must look after her mom whole of the life and not allowed to marry. Tilta was born and grew up in kitchen. She learned cooking skills form her primary caretaker very well. Cooking and food materials were as a toy for her since she was child, then she could learn to use her emotion and sense for cooking. Making emotional food. One time, she felt in love with first glance with a boy named Pedro. But because of her mother discipline she couldn’t marry with him, her mother recommended the oldest sister. Pedro accepted to marry with other sister in order to be close to Tilta more. The story has too much ups and down for reaching Tilta and Pedro. The first effect of food and emotion was seen in making a wedding cake for Tilda’s sister and how she was sad and cry and her tear dropped in cake and Nacha used this method to destroy the wedding cake. During the wedding party, the cake was seemed very beautiful and people taste it very well, but after while every body through out the cake near the river (which was very funny scent). Mother understood that something should be wrong and asked her to be far from or avoid being close with Petro.

The other part that is very significant was about making food made of rose leaf. Rose is symbol of sex, love and lust. The food cooking with rose leaf, made every body having affection, lust feeling.  It cause to one of her sister to scape and find his right person dramatically.

In this scene, it shows the importance of the food and the feeling  which are associated with food. It notices the role of the food for causing happening something.

 In my opinion the role of food was different in these two films.

 In first one, food was first alternative of some affairs, and love replaced to that; And then causes different things even with out eating and tasting. But in second movie, testing was much important; Food and eating together bring some sentimentality and feeling.
